"Wow, Rui En made some excellent points. Rouxuan provided the initial spark to this thread of discussion. And Phyllis provided a balanced and provocative spin to this whole issue on project work. I kind of agree with Phyllis' point on project work. Before I weigh in with my views, I would love to hear more views on the inclusion of project work in your final assessment grade. Please keep your thoughtful views coming. I am addicted to this forum now. Can someone counsel Mr Tan? Haaa... "

Mr Tan

"hi all
Maybe we should consider why some people use vulgar languages? It is easy to ban the use of the language than to explain convincingly why it should be banned. Don't get me wrong. I am certainly not encouraging the use of vulgarities in school. As Phyllis said, it is uncouth. So why do some people seem to like vulgarities? Is it a sign of frustration? "

The befuddled Mr Tan

"Wow, you girls could be counsellors. Maybe, you girls could form a support group for game addicts in Pei Hwa Sec. The school coud send you for counselling course. After the course, you could provide counselling service to fellow students suffering from various addictions, including game addiction. Do you think students would be more receptive to help provided by fellow students?
I find the question posed by Rui En very thought provocative. I seem to be seeing a different side of Rui En that has eluded me in class so far. Do you think you could apply some of these inquisitive skills to your lessons? Or maybe teachers should come to this forum and see what our students are writing. I am impressed. Please keep the wonderful thoughts alive. "

Mr Tan

"Dear all,
I am beginning to enjoy this forum a lot and wish more Pei Hwa students can join in the discussion.
I hope Rouxuan will not be discouraged to learn English. To be honest, I used to dislike the language too. This could be due to my family background. I grew up speaking Mandarin and dialect at home. I went to a neighbourhood secondary school where my classmates spoke Mandarin. It was the lingua franca in my primary to secondary school life. Things did not remain the same for long, though. When I went to junior college, I was surrounded by friends who came predominantly from English-speaking background. To be honest, I was a little "shaken". I was shy and afraid to speak up in class because I thought I could never make any sense in English. In contrast, my classmates who hailed from RI, SCGS and RGS seemed to be so much more fluent in the language. Fortunately, I did not allow this to stop me from pursuing what I thought was the right thing to do: to continue to work hard in improving my language.
My experience tells me that it is not easy to learn a new language, not even one which is commonly used in everyday life, like English. As a teacher, I like to encourage my students to be positive and not to be afraid of speaking up. To me, it is alright to make mistakes as long as we learn from them. So, Rouxuan, please continue to speak up and write in English. I would be very sad if you decide to give up. I have confidence in your ability to improve in the use of English over time, especially if you continue to be positive. Don't give up on the language, please. If Mr Tan could do it, so can you and everyone.
The points that Phyllis and Rui En made are valid. But I would like you to join me in helping others around us to learn English and speak it well. Will you promise me to be "crusaders" in promoting the use of English in Pei Hwa.
Having said the above, I am also an ardent supporter of the Chinese language. Unfortunately, I am losing touch with the language due to the lack of usage. Maybe Rouxuan and the rest of you can help Mr Tan brush up on his Chinese. If we help each other, we will all "win" in the end. Right?
Thanks "
Mr Tan
